Mountain Bikes

Noticed that mountain bikes aren’t as simple as they used to be?  Well, so have we!  No need to worry, even if you are new to cycling or returning after a break - Camberley Cycles staff will be happy to help narrow down your choices.  Simply tell us where you want to ride, how you like to ride and what budget you have in mind and we will point you in the right direction!  Below is a very brief explanation of different categories of mountain bikes.

Please note it is only a rough, light hearted and most important of all, honest guide and remember nothing beats popping into the shop to chat to us in person about your specific needs.

If you live further afield please feel free to call us to discuss your requirements as we can provide mail order/online order service for just about any of the products we stock.

Entry Level Bikes
An entry level mountain bike is very simple, with little or no suspension and 18 to 21 gears.  This kind of bike is for the kind of person who will only ride leisurely rides at weekends, chase the kids/dogs round the park or simply use as a workhorse to get to work or leave at a station.  Our prices start from £99 for men’s and ladies frames.  We only stock a few of these as most people feel they will benefit from a much better quality bike from our entry level XC bike range.  We are not going to replace stocks of these bikes once gone so if you fancy a bargain be quick!

Cross Country Bikes
Like to just get out for a ride, do lots of miles and don’t go crazy doing jumps and drops?  You need a cross country, or
XC bike.  Made to be as light as possible, short travel suspension (around 75 to 100mm) and 21 to 27 gears.  These bikes will also allow you to cycle to work without too much discomfort and also are good for leisurely family rides.  Entry level aluminium framed models from around £200, topping out at over £2,000 for seriously high performance machines, and lots to choose from in between!  Most of our major cycle suppliers (Felt, Merida, Commencal, Sunn, GT and Mongoose) have bikes in this catagory.

 Ladies specific mountainbikes

At Camberley Cycles we fully recognise the increase in demand for more serious ladies specific mountainbikes.  Yes we still stock several old fasioned, dropped top tube bikes but 2009 - 2010 will see an expanding range of ladies bikes that you can take more seriously.  Models will include the Summer range (come from the same factory as Mongoose) from around £300 - £400 and Merida from around £275.  We will also have an offering of ladies specific MTB from GT.

Trail Bike/Hardcore XC Bikes
Do you like the thought of an XC bike but worried you might be too heavy handed?  Like to do lots of miles but not afraid of going for it on the descents?  The new breed of trail bike, or sometimes called
Hardcore XC bike, might do the job.  A bit heavier than normal XC bikes, stronger frames and wheels and more suspension travel (around 130 to 140mm), these do-it-all machines are becoming more and more popular for the kind of rider who doesn’t want to feel restricted by their bike, and doesnt want the hassle of owning two bikes.  Camberley Cycles prices range from around £300 upwards for a hardtail through to £2000 plus for a dream full suspension bike such as the Sunn Kern.

Jump Style Bikes
OK, first of all, these bikes
ARE NOT INDESTRUCTABLE!  Just because they are aimed at this end of the market doesn’t mean you can jump them all day long without servicing them and checking things aren’t coming loose after a day of landing 4 foot high drops.  They are built to withstand a lot more punishment than normal MTBs, smaller to allow for better control and have fat tyres for improved grip and cushioning.  The kind of bike for the braver rider who likes nothing better than to ride dirt jumps all day long, and for those that have a habit of breaking things!  Prices start from around £300.  Choose from Commencal, Flow, DMR, Mongoose, UMF and GT.

Downhill/Freeride Bikes
Right, despite what some people will tell you, there is no such thing as a cheap downhill or freeride bike!  Cheap imitations may have all the right stickers but when the going gets tough, it will only end in tears.  These are made for one thing - going big, very big!  Ride these monsters at your own risk as they encourage the inner hooligan in all of us to emerge!  People buying these bikes need a strong, reliable and almost bullet-proof cycle with huge disc brakes and lots of suspension.  Expect to pay £1,699 to around £5,000.
